Pre Filter (Dirt/Sediment) Cartridges
These also come in a range of micron ratings (hole/pore size - the smaller the number the smaller the pore.). From 0.2 of a micron (typically used in wine filtration) and up to around 50 micron. Pre or Sediment filters are used to prolong the life of a carbon cartridge. They are installed into a dual water filtration system, prior to the carbon cartridge, and prevents the dirt, etc from clogging the carbon cartridge, leaving the carbon to do it's more important job of removing chemicals. Pre filters can also be used when
dirt free water is required for washing machines, etc. (Another product can also
be used for this (Please note: All water manufacturers state the following caution - "Do not use with water that is microbiologically unsafe or with water of unknown quality without adequate disinfection before or after the system.") Go to Pricing for Sediment Cartridges (or scroll to the top of the page).
There is a small range of micron (hole size) ratings available in ceramic cartridges. Starting at around 0.2 of a micron and going to around 0.8 of a micron. Due to these cartridges typically being very a fine filtration in nature, they can generally be cleaned when the flow of your treated water starts to get sluggish. They can be cleaned by physically taking a small layer off the ceramic each time with steel wool or abrasive dish cleaner. (Please note: All water manufacturers state the following caution - "Do not use with water that is microbiologically unsafe or with water of unknown quality without adequate disinfection before or after the system.") Standard Carbon Filter Cartridges
To remove chemicals, herbicides, pesticides, taste and odour, you will need to use a basic carbon based cartridge. There are various carbon cartridges available to you of varying quality, size and makeup. See A Word On... Cartridges-link. Carbon will not, however, remove minerals or salt from the water. (To do this you need to soften or condition the water.) There is a broad range of micron (hole size) ratings available in carbon cartridges. Starting at around 0.2 of a micron and going up to around 10 micron. These can be used as a single filtration element or can be used in the first or second stages of your water filter system - depending upon the quality of water required and the condition of the supply water. Basic carbon cartridges usually have a time limit on how long they can be used for (around 6 months). This is due to bacterial contamination. If a carbon cartridge is fine enough to stop bacteria (1 micron or less), then it will simply trap it on the outside of the cartridge, where it is free to multiply and grow in number. At this point, it is essential to replace the cartridge. (Please note: All water manufacturers state the following caution - "Do not use with water that is microbiologically unsafe or with water of unknown quality without adequate disinfection before or after the system.") The B.E.S.T. Alternative Carbon Cartridges (RECOMMENDED) View the PDF Version of the brochure for this product.-link These are Long-Life ANTI BACTERIAL Carbon Cartridges
One of the requirements for removing the maximum amount of contaminants possible from water is - the longer the water is in contact with the carbon, the better the removal (and the better the taste).
Most cartridges allow water to pass through the side of the cartridge and up through a tube in the middle. This only allows around 15mm of contact with the compacted carbon. See A Word on... Cartridges - link.

More Important Information for You The micron rating of a cartridge does not reflect its ability to remove chemicals. The micron rating indicates its ability to trap dirt, bacteria and parasites
HOW GOOD IS IT? The B.E.S.T. Test… Please see 'How Good Is It? The B.E.S.T. Test... under Field Experiments.-link
WHAT CARTRIDGES DO WHAT? 5 micron B.E.S.T. Alternative will remove dirt, chemicals and remain bacteria free. 1 micron B.E.S.T. Alternative will remove dirt, chemical, remain bacteria free and block parasites. In high dirt areas or if you are upgrading your existing filter to the B.E.S.T. Alternative, a sediment cartridge is recommended to be installed before the B.E.S.T. Alternative cartridge.
HOW LONG SHOULD A CARTRIDGE LAST? This is subject to the quality of the water being run through the unit.
Sediment - Generally, if the supply water is clear of dirt, a sediment/dirt cartridge should last a couple of years if bacteria are not breeding in it. Without the B.E.S.T. Alternative it is recommended to be changed every 6 months maximum.
Carbon - Even the cheapest cartridges are capable of a long life. Cartridges today can treat between 5,000 and 20,000 litres. A family of 4, drinking 2 litres per day, plus another 2 litres per day for cooking = 3,650 litres per year. So why do you change a 20,000 litre capacity cartridge every 6-12 months? Because Bacteria are breeding inside! From the first day that your cartridge is installed, it is removing the chemicals that have been added to control bacteria- once removed, bacteria is free to multiply.
TECHNICAL INFORMATION Use a 5-micron for chemical and dirt removal and a 1-micron for chemical, dirt and cyst prevention.
~ Flow rate - a higher flow rate is achievable, however with all filtration systems the slower the flow, the better the contaminant removal. * 15,000 litres life is the rating for the removal of chemicals, not dirt and sediment. Excessive use on water with high sedimentation may cause the built-in sediment filter to be clogged. NOTE - Cartridge life is subject to the quality of water being introduced. In highly chlorinated and sediment areas, the life can be shortened.

The B.E.S.T. 'Original SilverSafe' Cannister (RECOMMENDED)
It installs on the inlet side of the water filter, and when used in conjunction with the B.E.S.T. Alternative Carbon Cartridges, will provide a total solution for your drinking water requirements.
Did you know that this can be fitted to your existing water filter system?
THE SOLUTION! Now you replace the cartridges when the carbon runs out, not when the bacteria set in! Did you know that you can improve your existing system's performance and lower your running costs? When you install the Original SilverSafe® Silver Cannister prior to an existing filtration unit, this becomes the first line of defence against bacteria and protects the next stage of your filtration system.
