Pre Filter (Dirt/Sediment) Cartridges

These cartridges are used solely to remove dirt, sediment and rust from the water. They come in two different types - spun and pleated. Pleated filters are a high capacity cartridge and can be cleaned by hosing down to wash off the dirt layer from the exterior.

These also come in a range of micron ratings (hole/pore size - the smaller the number the smaller the pore.). From 0.2 of a micron (typically used in wine filtration) and up to around 50 micron. Pre or Sediment filters are used to prolong the life of a carbon cartridge. They are installed into a dual water filtration system, prior to the carbon cartridge, and prevents the dirt, etc from clogging the carbon cartridge, leaving the carbon to do it's more important job of removing chemicals.

Pre filters can also be used when dirt free water is required for washing machines, etc. (Another product can also be used for this purpose - a screen filter-link.)

(Please note: All water manufacturers state the following caution - "Do not use with water that is microbiologically unsafe or with water of unknown quality without adequate disinfection before or after the system.")

Go to Pricing for Sediment Cartridges (or scroll to the top of the page).

Ceramic Cartridges

Ceramic based cartridges are used solely as a parasite, cyst, and bacterial prevention medium. If there are no chemicals present in your supply water and it is very clean (in terms of dirt and sediment) and you simply want to remove the previously mentioned contaminants, then this cartridge can be used as a single filter system. Otherwise, it can be installed after a pre filter (for dirty water with no chemicals present) or after a carbon cartridge (for chemically treated water).

There is a small range of micron (hole size) ratings available in ceramic cartridges.  Starting at around 0.2 of a micron and going to around 0.8 of a micron.

Due to these cartridges typically being very a fine filtration in nature, they can generally be cleaned when the flow of your treated water starts to get sluggish. They can be cleaned by physically taking a small layer off the ceramic each time with steel wool or abrasive dish cleaner.

(Please note: All water manufacturers state the following caution - "Do not use with water that is microbiologically unsafe or with water of unknown quality without adequate disinfection before or after the system.")

Standard Carbon Filter Cartridges

Carbon is a material with an exceptionally high surface area. One gram of activated carbon has a surface area of approximately 500 m2, that's around two tennis courts!

To remove chemicals, herbicides, pesticides, taste and odour, you will need to use a basic carbon based cartridge. There are various carbon cartridges available to you of varying quality, size and makeup. See A Word On... Cartridges-link. Carbon will not, however, remove minerals or salt from the water. (To do this you need to soften or condition the water.)

There is a broad range of micron (hole size) ratings available in carbon cartridges.  Starting at around 0.2 of a micron and going up to around 10 micron. These can be used as a single filtration element or can be used in the first or second stages of your water filter system - depending upon the quality of water required and the condition of the supply water.

Basic carbon cartridges usually have a time limit on how long they can be used for (around 6 months). This is due to bacterial contamination. If a carbon cartridge is fine enough to stop bacteria (1 micron or less), then it will simply trap it on the outside of the cartridge, where it is free to multiply and grow in number. At this point, it is essential to replace the cartridge.

(Please note: All water manufacturers state the following caution - "Do not use with water that is microbiologically unsafe or with water of unknown quality without adequate disinfection before or after the system.")

These are Long-Life ANTI BACTERIAL Carbon Cartridges

It is a well-known fact that water filters breed bacteria.

This is the sole reason why you have to change your filters regularly - bacterial contamination. It is not because the carbon has been used up. Even the cheapest of carbon filters have the ability to treat water for around 4000 litres. (For a family of 4, that's around 18 months worth of filtered water.)

One of the requirements for removing the maximum amount of contaminants possible from water is - the longer the water is in contact with the carbon, the better the removal (and the better the taste).

Most cartridges allow water to pass through the side of the cartridge and up through a tube in the middle. This only allows around 15mm of contact with the compacted carbon. See A Word on... Cartridges - link.

The new 'B.E.S.T. Alternative' cartridge -

  1. Water enters at the base of the cartridge;

  2. through a pre filter to remove dirt particles;

  3. through a bed of silver coated gems (not silver impregnated) to destroy bacteria;

  4. through high quality, loosely packed carbon to remove chemicals. (By being loosely packed allows a greater surface area of the carbon to be used giving you a longer life);

  5. then finally through a second bed of silver coated gems.

(Around 10 times more 'contact time' than standard filters). The result…

NOW you change your cartridge when the carbon runs out,
not when the bacteria sets in!

Rated to remove chemicals to an average of 16,000 litres.

More Important Information for You

The micron rating of a cartridge does not reflect its ability to remove chemicals. The micron rating indicates its ability to trap dirt, bacteria and parasites

  • Carbon does NOT destroy bacteria - it traps it.

  • Carbon is porous like chalk. Good quality carbon has more internal surfaces than the external surface that you can see. (This is where bacteria breeds.)

WHAT CARTRIDGES DO WHAT?

5 micron B.E.S.T. Alternative will remove dirt, chemicals and remain bacteria free.

1 micron B.E.S.T. Alternative will remove dirt, chemical, remain bacteria free and block parasites.

In high dirt areas or if you are upgrading your existing filter to the B.E.S.T. Alternative, a sediment cartridge is recommended to be installed before the B.E.S.T. Alternative cartridge.

HOW LONG SHOULD A CARTRIDGE LAST? This is subject to the quality of the water being run through the unit.

  • Dirt is always inestimable (Eg. burst mains, dust in tank water, etc).

  • Chemicals can be roughly calculated as they are added to town water at controlled rates, although some towns have little or no chemicals present.

  • Bacteria are unknown.

  • Cartridge life also depends on how many people are using the filtered water.

Sediment - Generally, if the supply water is clear of dirt, a sediment/dirt cartridge should last a couple of years if bacteria are not breeding in it. Without the B.E.S.T. Alternative it is recommended to be changed every 6 months maximum.

Carbon - Even the cheapest cartridges are capable of a long life. Cartridges today can treat between 5,000 and 20,000 litres. A family of 4, drinking 2 litres per day, plus another 2 litres per day for cooking = 3,650 litres per year. So why do you change a 20,000 litre capacity cartridge every 6-12 months? Because Bacteria are breeding inside! From the first day that your cartridge is installed, it is removing the chemicals that have been added to control bacteria- once removed, bacteria is free to multiply.

~ Flow rate - a higher flow rate is achievable, however with all filtration systems the slower the flow, the better the contaminant removal.

* 15,000 litres life is the rating for the removal of chemicals, not dirt and sediment. Excessive use on water with high sedimentation may cause the built-in sediment filter to be clogged.

NOTE - Cartridge life is subject to the quality of water being introduced. In highly chlorinated and sediment areas, the life can be shortened.
