There are many different styles and types of cartridges on the market today.

BASIC KNOWLEDGE ON CARBON CARTRIDGES

How a filter works. It is in fact a very simple process. If you threw iron filings at a magnet, the magnet attracts the iron filings and they stick there. In simple terms, this is basically what happens with carbon and chemicals. The chemicals are attracted to the carbon. This process is called adsorption.

It is the physic's of the carbon that remove the chemicals, not the density of the carbon. A 5- micron rated carbon cartridge will do just as good a job as a cartridge that has compressed carbon to a 1- micron rating. In fact quite often it is better. This is because most 1 micron cartridges are 'radial flow' [radial- where water enters through the side]. This means the water is only in contact with the carbon for around 20mm or 3/4 inch.

Knowing how carbon removes chemicals, it is common sense that the longer the water is in contact with the carbon, the better filtration you get. CONTACT TIME is the secret to good chemical removal.

A loosely packed 'axial flow cartridge' [axial- where the water comes from one end, through the entire length and out the other end] will give you around 10 times more contact time than a radial flow. This can be up to a round 230mm or 9 inches.

A premium piece of carbon has more internal surfaces than it has external surface. Similar to a piece of chalk, tiny pore holes are throughout the piece of carbon. This why such a little amount of carbon has a great effect in removing chemicals.
