Health Warning on Biofilm

Biofilm is a gel like substance secreted by bacteria. You can see this for your self by lifting the lid on your toilet cistern and running your hand down the inside- it will feel slimy. Regardless of whether the water is chlorinated or not bacteria still enter the water mains through various means. Once bacteria find somewhere with protection, a pipe joint, water tanks and water filters, they continue to multiply and produce this biofilm which is impervious to the chlorine.

Eventually the biofilm is broken and now multitudes of bacteria are released back into your water. The low level of chlorine isn't sufficient enough to destroy the large number. It is believed that levels of bacteria are up to 1000 times more resistant to the chlorine.
